Juicing

Part 6 of my interview with a very healthy octogenarian:

Q: What’s a good brand for a juicer?

A: That’s the Champion Juicer.  But there are several other makes.  And what you do is you juice your carrots and a couple sticks of celery and an apple, and a little bit of fresh ginger.  And you wash it clean and then you juice them, and that makes a delicious drink.  And what you’re doing, there are people who would say Oh, well, you’re – you’re getting rid of all the pulp when you juice and you’re – you’re getting rid of the vitamins and minerals.  Well, that’s not so.  They have known now with double-blind studies that when you juice, the juice has all the vitamins and minerals.  And the pulp that’s left over, that you can dispose of, throw it away, because it really doesn’t have any use, it’s just extra fiber in your system that you don’t really need.

You’re getting extra fiber and you don’t need all that fiber.  And so you’re getting the best of the – the vitamins and minerals.  That’s why we do believe that you need some multi-vitamin supplements, but you’re getting the bulk of that from the live food that you’re eating, you see.  That’s the second meal of the day, technically.

And then, of course, for – we all recognize that most people eat either two or three meals a day.  But supposedly, if you’re juicing and you make smoothie for breakfast and you juice for lunch, and you can have a piece of fruit in between times, then you can have one cooked meal at night. There are lots of people out there who say you should – we should be eating raw period.  They don’t feel that we were – that man was made to eat cooked foods, he was made to eat raw food.

There are all kinds of studies, and some agree and some disagree.  But for most of us, it’s very difficult to eat non-cooked foods all the time.  So George Malkmus in his writings has indicated that most people, if they’re – they can stand to eat two uncooked meals a day and then have one cooked meal a day.  Whether you want that cooked meal at lunchtime or whether you want it at suppertime, that doesn’t make much difference because it’s in that period of time between 12 o’clock noon and 8 o’clock at night.
